5 Incredible Benefits of Turmeric for Your Teeth
3/24/2020
Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for multiple health issues.

While this super spice is used to improve many disorders like chronic pain and arthritis, it should be also noted that turmeric can be used for improving dental health. This spice has many f amazing powerful properties due to its active component called curcumin. It also gives turmeric its beautiful orange-yellow color.

Turmeric is actively used in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for all medicinal purposes such as the treatment of various infections, skin conditions, stress, and even depression. Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even anti-cancer effects. This makes it a powerful tool to prevent and even reverse many common and chronic health issues.

If you’re already taking supplements with turmeric or adding it to your dishes regularly in order to relieve joint pain or improve metabolism, you may be surprised to know that you also improve your dental health.  Let’s look at five amazing ways turmeric improves oral health:

1. Turmeric can help manage pain and inflammation

When it comes to dental health, decreasing and preventing inflammation is a top goal. Turmeric is often used in the dental world as a component of mouthwash. It’s also used in cavity prevention methods and in gum disease treatment.  This super spice may also act as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent since it reduces the levels of pro-inflammatory histamine and at the same time increases the production of natural inflammation-suppressing cortisone in the body.

Therefore, it’s no wonder that turmeric can help relieve pain and inflammation caused by a toothache, cavity or infection. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient that is able to inhibit the biosynthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins in the body.

2. Turmeric prevents gum inflammation and plaque formation

According to a study published in The Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice, a turmeric-based mouthwash is able to prevent plaque formation and early gingivitis

Turmeric’s ability to treat gingivitis and its symptoms were impressive and researchers found its ability to greatly reduce the total microbial count. This study suggests that turmeric mouthwash can be effectively used as an additional option for mechanical plaque control methods in the prevention of plaque and gingivitis.

3. Turmeric whitens teeth

You probably know that activated charcoal and baking soda are used as natural teeth whiteners. The good news is that turmeric is no less effective in teeth whitening.

When used for several days regularly, this super spice may help your teeth naturally become whiter due to its ability to decrease the appearance of stains. You can try using a paste made from turmeric, coconut oil, and baking soda. Allow the turmeric to remain on your teeth for two to five minutes, rinse thoroughly, and then brush with your regular toothpaste.

4. Turmeric is used in oral cancer treatment

A scientific review published in the Molecular Cancer journal claims that curcumin is a non-toxic, natural substance that has some anticancer properties. More specifically, research shows that curcumin can combat cancer in the way it affects various biological pathways and processes involved in cancer development, tumor formation, expression of a gene that can potentially cause cancer, the tendency of some cancers to spread to different organs and areas of the body, as well as apoptosis (programmed cell death of cancer cells).

The scientific review assumes that curcumin fits the description of an anti-cancer agent that offers a reduced risk of toxicity and adverse side effects, but without a comprise of therapeutic efficacy.

5. Turmeric combats dental infection

If you’re trying to fight an infection in your mouth,  turmeric-based golden milk tea may be the perfect option for you. Since it contains antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent and antioxidant benefits, the spice can be used as an effective natural dental aid.
