What is Open Heart Surgery?
The open heart surgery is done on the heart where the patient’s chest is opened depending on the type of surgery. The heart may or may not be opened depending on the particular type of surgery.
The open heart surgery is required to perform a CABG for the patients suffering from CHD or coronary heart disease which occurs when the blood vessels that provides blood and oxygen to the heart becomes hard and narrow. This heart condition is called as hardening of the arteries. A heart attack may occur when the blood can’t flow properly to the heart.
The open heart surgery is performed to repair or replace the heart valves which allow blood to travel to the heart, repairs the damaged or abnormal areas of the heart, replace a damaged or diseased heart with a donated heart, known as a heart transplantation, install the medical devices to help the heart beat properly.
Who is a good candidate for this surgery?
A patient under 70 years of age and have a fairly good physical condition is a good candidate for the low cost open heart surgery in India. A person weighing less than 30 pounds and willing to make certain lifestyle changes needed to live for a long time and a patient having a caregiver who takes care about the disease seriously.
Open Heart Surgery-Procedure
An open heart surgery may take about 4 to 6 hours and it is performed under general anaesthesia. The patient will be asleep during this surgery and will not experience any pain through the complete procedure. During this surgery, the cardiac surgeon will create an 8-10 inch incision in the chest through all or part of the patient’s breastbone to expose the heart. Then the patient is connected to a heart-lung bypass machine that moves the blood away from the heart such that the surgeon can now operate. The surgeon will use a healthy artery or vein to create a new path around the blocked artery and then close the breastbone with the wire by leaving it inside the body. The original incision will be stitched up.
Open Heart Surgery Preparations:
Discuss with your surgeon about the medicines you take before the surgery. You will be asked to quit smoking two weeks prior to the surgery. You should stop taking the blood thinning medications. You will be asked to wash yourself with special soap in order to reduce the risk of infection post surgery. You will not be allowed to eat or drink anything after midnight before the day of surgery. The doctor will give you detailed instructions when you arrive at the hospital for the surgery.
Recovery:
After waking up from the surgery, you will have about 2 to 3 tubes in your chest which will drain the fluid from the region around the heart. You will have IVs that supply with fluids and a catheter in your bladder to remove the urine. You will be connected to the machines that monitor your heart. Usually, you’ll spend the first night in the ICU and then be moved to a regular recovery room for next 3 to 7 days. The nurses will be near you to fulfill your needs.
