At TouchCare, we love talking all things health. It’s even in our tagline - a healthier understanding of healthcare. Our goal is to make sure our members understand all their benefits and use them efficiently to be better consumers and get the best care possible.
When we talk about health, it’s easy to just focus on heart health, or liver health, or brain health, and not whole health. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on another area of the body that is too often overlooked: the mind.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
TouchCare cares about the whole person, and we can help make use of the tools and resources that your benefits offer. Most medical insurance plans cover mental health, but many people struggle with finding a good, affordable, in-network provider.
That’s where TouchCare comes in. We do the research for you, presenting you with an easy-to-read, side by side comparison of a few different providers in your area. Even in those far-reaching locations, we’re able to find quality care options for our members.
Connection between Mind and Body
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 Americans is affected by mental health conditions. Stigma can prevent people seeking care, creating an environment of shame, fear, and silence. Mental Health Awareness Month is focused on de-stigmatizing mental health throughout our communities.
Furthermore, the link between mental health and physical health cannot be overstated.
-
Poor mental health is a risk factor for chronic physical conditions.
-
People with chronic physical conditions are at risk of developing poor mental health.
More succinctly put, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that “there is no health without mental health.”
At TouchCare, we conducted our own study about the link between mental health, opioid use, and increased medical spending. Using a sample of our member population, we found some striking correlations in the insurance claims data, pointing to a link between mental illness and increased healthcare usage (poorer physical health).
The Solution?
The contributing factors behind the mental health crisis in America are complex, and it’s easy to feel that any sort of solution to the issue is confounding.
However, at TouchCare, we offer a solid first step. We focus on the individual and their situation. We reassure members by guiding them through the confusing healthcare system. We help members find the providers they need, enabling them to differentiate between practitioners like psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, and therapists. We help them understand how much a visit might cost.
Solving the mental health crisis in America is a big challenge, and we want to make the first step as easy as possible.
