9 Simple Tips for Successful Rhinoplasty Recovery
3/30/2021
Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgery that changes the structures of your nose and nasal cavities to create a more aesthetically pleasing and functional nose. To avoid additional correctional procedures and ensure the best possible results of rhinoplasty, it is vital to take some precautionary measures.

Continue reading to discover the nine essential tips for preserving the result of your rhinoplasty.

1. Reduce the swelling

Try using flexible ice packs and cooling pads to minimize bruising and reduce pressure and swelling in your nose. This is particularly vital during the first few days after the treatment. The cold will decrease blood circulation to your nose and help the tissues heal faster.

2. Avoid anti-inflammatories unless recommended by a doctor

Anti-inflammatory drugs may increase blood flow, leading to swelling, bleeding, and slow healing. Consult your rhinoplasty specialist about using anti-inflammatory medications before taking any of them during rhinoplasty recovery

3. Avoid taking pain relievers without a specialist’s approval

It’s normal to feel pain and discomfort during the first few weeks after the procedure. Pains relievers or other medicines may be recommended or prescribed to reduce postoperative soreness and tenderness. Your doctor will choose medications and dosages to fit your specific needs and prevent any side-effects that may interfere with recovery or create difficulties with the healing process.

4. Take time off

Avoiding any vigorous activity is essential to allow your body to focus its energy on healing. Also, make sure to not indulge in activities that put you at risk of bumping or otherwise damaging your nose. The point is to let the operated area heal and to avoid any stress or damage during recovery.

5. Take regular walks

Walking after rhinoplasty can be beneficial for various reasons. It helps alleviate muscle weakness and soreness and keeps regulating your body after sitting or lying for too long. Walking can also slightly increase blood flow throughout your body, helping bring oxygen and nutrients to the operated area.

6. Take baths instead of showers

After the rhinoplasty, your nose will be covered in bandages and supported by a splint. Most rhinoplasty specialists will also tape a gauze bandage under your nose to catch any dripping of blood. Taking baths instead of showers helps keep your bandages dry. To clean your face around bandages, try carefully washing it with a damp cloth. The bandage should be worn for no more than 7 to 10 days following the surgery, so this routine won’t have to continue for long.

7. Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet

Eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water is essential to heal faster and feel better sooner. A balanced diet provides your body with all the elements, vitamins, and nutrition necessary for proper healing. Water speeds up healing by washing out toxins from medications and minimizing the risk of infection. Water improves nutrient and oxygen delivery to the wound and allows drainage to occur properly.

8. Limit spicy and peppery foods

Staying off spicy and peppery foods is important to prevent nose irritation. Spicy foods may widen your blood vessels, increasing bruising and swelling during the early stage of healing. By limiting your consumption of spicy foods, you may prevent your nose from bleeding and becoming sore.

9. Rest and keep your head elevated

Rest is crucial to achieving a faster recovery. Sleeping or resting while placing a few extra pillows under your head will prevent your nose and face from swelling. Keeping your head elevated helps retain fluids from the operated area and face. And rest allows your body to spend its energy on healing rather than other activities.
