Reasons To Visit a Gynecologist

Even though gynecological check-ups are essential for women’s health, many women tend to postpone or even skip them. As a result, they may have advanced conditions that cause a lot of severe symptoms and complications.

It is essential to understand that many gynecological disorders can be successfully treated in the early stages. That’s why you need to visit a gynecologist regularly. In this article, we have gathered eight weighty reasons to visit a gynecologist you shouldn’t neglect.

1. You have had unprotected sex

If you have had unprotected sex, you need to understand that it may result not only in an unwanted pregnancy. You should know that many sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be passed during unprotected intercourse.

The main problem is that many people may have nos symptoms and pass the infections and viruses to other people. Additionally, you should know that hormonal contraception and all types of non-hormonal contraception except for condoms (both male and female) can’t protect you from STDs. That’s why it is essential to use condoms during sex If you want to reduce your risk of getting STDs.

2. You have abnormal vaginal discharge

A female reproductive system usually produces a vaginal discharge that can change a little during the menstrual cycle. For example, during ovulation, discharges can become thicker to help sperm penetrate the uterus.

But if your discharge starts to smell differently, or have changed their color or texture, it can be a sign of a certain infection. Some STDs, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, and other infections can affect your discharge. Therefore, it is better to make an appointment with your gynecologist to avoid serious complications.

3. You have pelvic pain

Pelvic pain is quite familiar to most women of reproductive age. Many women experience pain and discomfort during periods while others may also experience painful sanctions during ovulation. However, pelvic pain can manifest some serious health issues that may require medical attention.

For example, ovarian cysts can cause pelvic pain that can worsen during ovulation and periods. Cysts are sacs filled with fluid that occur on the ovaries. If you are diagnosed with ovarian cysts, it is essential to monitor your condition and undergo treatment, especially if cysts cause symptoms. If left untreated, ovarian cysts can burst or lead to ovarian torsion.

4. You have irregular or missed periods

Irregular periods mean that your periods are often late or start earlier a few times in a row. If your periods are late once or twice, it can be deemed normal. But if your periods are late too often or even disappear at all, it can be a sign of some dysfunction.

Indeed, periods can disappear if you are stressed or have significant weight changes. But you should know that many health issues (like thyroid disease, PCOS, hormonal imbalance, etc.) can also affect your menstrual cycle. That’s why it is better to visit a gynecologist for a thorough examination.

5.You have fertility issues

Problems with fertility are quite common for many people all over the world. If you can’t get pregnant practicing unprotected sex for a year, you can have fertility issues. It is important to understand that both men and women can be infertile. That’s why both partners should be examined.

There are a lot of factors that can contribute to female infertility. For example, women with PCOS have increased levels of male hormones and cysts, which can interfere with conception. Conditions like uterine fibroid or polyps can block the fallopian tubes and make fertilization difficult or even impossible.

6. You have pain during sex

Pain during sex is a quite common issue that can affect women of all ages. Fortunately, this pain is usually caused by too deep penetration or an uncomfortable pose. However, if sex remains painful even when you change the pose, you may have a certain gynecological condition.

Vaginal dryness is a condition that affects many women that have reached menopause or have decreased levels of estrogen. Pain during sex can also occur in women with endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and many other diseases. If you experience pain and/or discomfort during sexual intercourse, it is better to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist.

7. You have heavy and painful periods

Many women of childbearing age experience painful sensations during periods. Mild pain and discomfort during periods that last a day or two and can be eliminated with the help of a heating pad or painkillers can be considered normal. But unbearable pain that lasts for many days and interferes with your daily activity can manifest some serious issues.

Heavy and painful periods are quite common for women with endometriosis. This condition occurs when the endometrial tissue (inner uterine lining) starts to grow on pelvic organs. Due to the fact that this tissue sheds during periods, it can cause severe cramps, pain, and heavy blood flow.

8. You have spotting

Spotting is light vaginal bleeding that can occur during ovulation or because of some conditions. If you have spotting during ovulation, it can be deemed normal. However, it is better to contact your gynecologist and undergo a pelvic exam to define the exact cause of bleeding. It is important to understand that spotting can be a sign of some dangerous diseases.

Cervical cancer is a dangerous disease that can progress without any severe symptoms except spotting and pain during sex. The main problem is that it can be left untreated for a long period of time if you don’t undergo regular gynecological check-ups and cervical biopsy procedures.

The bottom line

You need to understand that regular gynecologic exams can help prevent the development and aggravation of many conditions. Additionally, if you have noticed at least some unusual symptoms, it is better to visit a gynecologist and evaluate your condition. Timely and accurate treatment can help ease your symptoms and improve your well-being.
