Laparoscopic myomectomy surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that requires several small incisions in the abdomen. Through the tiny incisions, surgeons can have an easy access of fibroids with the help of a laparoscope. Through another incision, carbon dioxide gas is filled in the abdominal cavity and through the laparoscope doctors can see the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus.
Under the laparoscopic myomectomy surgery, using other long instruments through another incision the fibroids are removed. After removing fibroids the uterine muscle is then sewn back, gas is released and the incisions are stapled and closed. The surgery is performed under anesthesia and patient is usually required to stay in hospital for one night. Patient will require two to four weeks for complete recovery at home.
Laparoscopic myomectomy surgery being minimally invasive is beneficial due to less blood loss, lower rates of post surgery complications as well.
Myomectomy can be a good option for women who have fibroids and desire to get pregnant. Unlike a hysterectomy, myomectomy removes the fibroids only and spares uterus and thus facilitates women to try to conceive and get children.
Though most of the fibroids do not pose problems yet some of the fibroids depending on their size and location may interfere with the ability of the sperms to fertilize egg or implant an embryo, especially the fibroids positioned in uterus i.e. the space meant for the fetus or baby can cause problems during pregnancy.
Laparoscopic myomectomy surgery can help in removal of fibroids and pave way for the future pregnancies. Following the surgery, the patient needs to wait for minimum three to six months before trying to get pregnant to allow uterus to heal completely.
As per trial reports, age, size and number of fibroids play a crucial role in future pregnancies. Younger women with small sized and less number of fibroid are more likely to get pregnant after laparoscopic myomectomy surgery.
The researches have revealed that women who have had more than six fibroids removed are less likely to conceive than women with fewer fibroids removed.
The early signs of fibroids include:
Sometimes fibroids press against the muscles and nerves of the lower back that may cause back pain.
