An epidural steroid injection is a type of injection where a combination of a local anesthetic, commonly referred to as numbing medication, and a corticosteroid is injected into the epidural area of the spine. The membrane covers the spine and nerves and protects them from being damaged. Nerves travel through the membrane and into the epidural space to the back and into the legs.
