Scientists Identify Two Threats That Could End Humanity: Nuclear War and AI Biological Weapons
10/23/2026
A major Lancet scientific assessment identifies nuclear conflict and malicious AI use, including biological weapons, as potential extinction-level threats, raising urgent questions about security

Scientists have identified two threats with the potential to bring about human extinction: nuclear conflict and the malicious use of artificial intelligence, including AI-enabled biological weapons. The findings come from the Lancet Commission on 21st Century Global Threats to Health, published in October 2026, which examined 17 major dangers facing humanity between 2025 and 2100. The assessment raises urgent questions about global security, civil defence and how ordinary families could survive the consequences of a catastrophic emergency.

The international scientific assessment examines threats ranging from pandemics and climate change to armed conflict and emerging technologies. While the likelihood of human extinction remains low, researchers warn that nuclear conflict and malicious AI applications could have consequences far beyond conventional disasters. Unlike many other global health threats, these scenarios have the potential to end human civilisation altogether.

One of the most alarming concerns involves the misuse of artificial intelligence to develop biological weapons. AI is rapidly transforming biotechnology, medicine and pharmaceutical research, but increasingly capable systems could also make specialised biological knowledge more accessible to malicious actors. Scientists are concerned that these technologies could lower barriers to dangerous biological weapons research, creating security risks that existing international safeguards may struggle to contain.

An attack involving a highly transmissible biological agent could spread across borders, overwhelm healthcare systems, interrupt international transport and severely disrupt food supplies and essential services. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how rapidly infectious disease can affect entire societies. A deliberately created biological emergency could introduce additional dangers, particularly if authorities struggled to identify the threat or prevent its spread. Although AI-enabled human extinction is not an established technical capability today, the possibility of catastrophic misuse has become a serious scientific and security concern.

Nuclear war represents the second extinction-level threat highlighted by the Commission. Nuclear weapons can destroy cities within minutes through extreme heat, blast damage and radiation. However, the consequences of a major nuclear conflict could extend far beyond the countries directly attacked. Scientific research indicates that enormous fires following nuclear explosions could inject soot into the upper atmosphere, reducing sunlight, disrupting global temperatures and severely damaging agricultural production.

The resulting phenomenon, commonly known as nuclear winter, could trigger widespread food shortages and famine. Countries thousands of kilometres from the conflict could suffer catastrophic consequences despite never being directly attacked. In an extreme scenario, the collapse of global food production could threaten the survival of humanity itself. The Commission's findings reinforce the seriousness of nuclear conflict as a threat not only to individual nations but to civilisation worldwide.

For civilians outside the immediate destruction zones, radioactive fallout presents another major danger. Radioactive particles can contaminate extensive areas, exposing people to harmful radiation. Airborne contamination can also enter buildings through ventilation systems, doors, windows and other openings. Most residential properties were never designed to provide comprehensive protection against nuclear, biological or chemical emergencies.

These dangers are bringing renewed attention to fallout shelters, private bunkers and protected rooms. A properly engineered shelter requires adequate radiation shielding, structural protection, controlled ventilation, emergency power, sanitation and essential supplies. In shelters intended to address airborne chemical, biological and radiological hazards, specialised NBC/CBRN air filtration can provide an important additional layer of protection.

High-efficiency particulate filtration can reduce the entry of airborne particles, including many biological aerosols and particles associated with radioactive fallout. Specialised activated-carbon filtration can help remove specified chemical contaminants, while positive-pressure ventilation reduces the uncontrolled entry of outside air. However, filtration does not replace radiation shielding or medical and public health measures. Effective protection depends on the complete shelter design and the specific hazards involved.

British manufacturer Castellex specialises in NBC/CBRN air filtration systems for fallout shelters, private bunkers, safe rooms and protected facilities. Its Air550HCC Ultimate is designed for protected environments and incorporates specialist filtration, positive-pressure ventilation, backup batteries and manual charging capability for emergencies involving interruptions to normal electricity supplies.

Existing residential basements may also provide a starting point for protective shelter construction, provided they are properly assessed and upgraded. Simply moving underground does not guarantee protection from radiation or contaminated air. Structural integrity, shielding, ventilation, emergency access, water and sanitation must all be considered before a basement can function as an effective fallout shelter.

The scientific assessment makes clear that preventing nuclear conflict and dangerous AI misuse must remain international priorities. Governments, researchers and technology developers have critical responsibilities in reducing these risks. At the same time, civil-defence planning and household emergency preparedness deserve greater attention because the opportunity to prepare may disappear once a major crisis begins.

The central warning is stark: two technologies created by humanity could, under extreme circumstances, threaten humanity's continued existence. A properly designed shelter cannot prevent nuclear war or a biological attack, but it can provide protection against certain consequences. The findings raise a question that extends beyond governments and scientists: if a catastrophic emergency occurred, how prepared would ordinary families be?

Further information about the scientific findings, biological security risks and fallout shelter protection is available in Castellex's article, Nuclear War and AI Biological Weapons: Why Fallout Shelters Matter.
