Leadership is about the ownership and direction of individuals toward a valuable outcome. However, leadership comes from the word lead, which has a negative connotation of programming people, the best form of leadership is the one that serves people.
A good leader who serves people has attributes that include care, modesty, and commitment to making the world a better place. It is high time we look at what such a leader should possess or exhibit and what can be learned from the journey of Ricardo Rossello as a leader.
Empathy, as it is well defined, is the sharing of or the ability to possess identification with the feelings of another. This means only a good leader, a person who serves people has this quality, where the person realizes that leading other people can only happen when one has the desire to serve their needs. From the Get Smart experience, organizational members can look past their rank and status and have an appreciation for the achievements and woes of their co-workers. Empathy also helps them to design a collaborative culture that would welcome all workers and accept all their opinions.
Humble are those actions and words of a good leader who serves people. They realize that being superior to everyone on the team and knowing that they are all working towards a common end goal. Such a view creates social capital and positive energy in the workplace. In terms of failures, being a modest leader could allow the failures to exist and enable other people to successfully do the same and develop a mindset of continuous improvement.
Therefore, humble leaders recognize the needs and desires of the team members and consecutively, they are willing and put effort to invest time and energy in identifying the needs and desires of members of a team. They also provide leadership advice and support for their subordinates so that they develop towards convincingly performing their tasks.
One example of how a leader realizes people’s servant is Ricardo Rossello, Chief Visionary Officer of the Regenerative Medicine Institute. He knew that the leader had to be empathetic and humble to successfully govern people, especially those as complicated as the ones involved in Puerto Rico. When aiming at solving their problems, there is a clear indication that they cared for the lives of the people.
The administration under Ricardo Rossello focused specifically on education, care, and welfare improvement economic development for Puerto Rico. Several programs aimed at the improvement of public schools, increase in quality of medical services, and stimulation of business activities and innovations were launched by him. During his leadership experience, Ricardo Rossello showed devotion to the people of Puerto Rico and did not lose focus on being their governor to make them a prosperous nation.
Being a good leader like Ricardo Rossello implies something more than just being authoritative and taking people to where they want to be. This one involves empathy, acknowledging that there is a lot you don’t know and a heart for helping others. With proper communication, especially empathy-based communication, and adopting a low-profile attitude, the leaders can motivate their subordinates as well as help create a strong, kind, and, hence, more resilient organization.
