We need to realize that all we do impacts the world in ways that are not only out of our consideration. Just like it means that a trip to visit family using an airline emits carbon that harms the environment, and even driving to a grocery store emits carbon as well. The footprints are the total number of impacts a person, community, etc, has on the climate through the food we eat, the transport we use, and the energy used in our homes, among others are known as the carbon footprints. Efficient utilization of personal details and measures to limit the carbon footprint would result in better quality for people as well as for the Earth.
Every product we use, from the car we use to travel to the food we eat, requires fossil energy that is created and used, thus emitting heat-trapping gases. The general population of the USA produces global warming emissions of more than 15 metric tons per capita per year. Combined, all of these small, personal contributions cumulatively play their part in continuing to warm the planet and accumulate climate-altering gases that result in melting glaciers, rising seas, more frequent and intense storms, and the extinction of species. Still, shifting away from fossil fuels may have a positive impact not only on nature as a whole but on us as individuals, too.
Reduced meat intake lowers greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture while also helping to minimize health problems associated with high intakes of red meat. Driving a car as little as possible, cycling, or taking the bus saves both CO2 emissions and money, and it is an extra way to incorporate physical activity into our lives. Starting with household lights switching to LED light bulbs, to water in a reusable bottle collected from the tap, little things go a long way in reducing emissions and waste, and most times cheaper and more convenient.
While carbon emissions remain a reality for each of us as individuals, effective strategies to reduce those emissions are currently being employed as we practice elements such as heating our homes during winter. Carbon offset programs mitigate the effects of these remaining emissions by contributing to funding of renewable energy sources, afforestation, and other sustainability initiatives. Companies, including airlines, Businesses in the entertainment, automobile, and technology sectors, and even governments, are rushing to make good quality carbon offset programs. It is also very simple for the individual to sign up for other services such as CarbonClick, which assists travelers offset their flight emissions which contributes to the majority of the average carbon footprint.
Small contributions build up to collectively cater for large-scale renewable energy investment as well as for planting systems that physically sequester CO2 from the environment. Carbon offsets offer a transitionary measure to aggressively reduce current emissions in the period it takes for the world to adapt to lower-emissions lifestyles and activities.
While climate change is global, it stems from human activities in people’s day-to-day lives and structures. Our lifestyle defines the health of our planet – but changing behaviors and systems can help families, communities, businesses, and nations become sustainable. When we ‘walk softly,’ we go faster and further on both equity and ecology.
