Baltimore City, Maryland - Almost twenty-two years after the arson murders of Angela Dawson, her husband Carnell, and their five minor children on Baltimore’s East Side, DiTanya Washington, the former Baltimore City Witness Security Coordinator who once worked under the leadership of Baltimore’s Top Prosecutor, Patricia Coates-Jessamy, is set to self-publish her debut novel entitled ‘ANGELA: Women of the African Diaspora, Community, and Survival’. This work of creative non-fiction is based on actual events and delivers an intimate account of what took place before and after the unfortunate tragedy which claimed seven innocent lives.
Scheduled for release in October 2024, the timing of this autogenous novel could not be more perfect as it speaks to the disastrous social issues that are currently extinguishing the men and women who represent the African Diaspora in the United States. The book details the author’s life and experiences growing up as an inner Baltimore City youth and what led her to choose a career of service to the citizens of her hometown. Witnessing injustice and cases involving police brutality, the author has elected to openly share what it was like being a cop in Baltimore City. For some, it will be an eye-opener.
As a woman who represents the African Diaspora, DiTanya’s message is one of faith, surrender, and forgiveness. Delivering an intimate account of the system, its protocols, processes, and the bureaucracy that often results in the re-victimization of individuals, specifically those of African descent, the author vividly explores social issues such as Black-on-Black Crime, Black Femicide, Intimate Partner Violence, and the Strong Black Woman Schema. With an engaging and persuasive story-telling style, as well as her technique, DiTanya demonstrates her authority as an up and coming novelist.
As the 1999 Recipient of the Maryland Governor’s Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Victim Rights and Services, DiTanya now advocates through story-telling; giving voice to the marginalized, survivors, and the deceased. As a 2022 and 2023 Coverfly National Semi-Finalist, Ms. Washington has certainly proven her literary capabilities.
“Those who can neither control our narrative nor imprison us will always seek ways to police the way others view us.” - DiTanya Washington, Author
