6 Natural Ways to Keep Your Gums Healthy
9/21/2022
Dental Health

You may be able to acquire healthy gums with the use of some home remedies, which are crucial to your general well-being. These natural treatments may help prevent gum disease when combined with an oral hygiene routine that also includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day, regular flossing, and going to the dentist for professional cleanings and check-ups at least every six months.

Plaque is a sticky substance that bacteria in your mouth constantly create on your teeth. Plaque can be removed with brushing and flossing, but it can also solidify into tartar. In many situations, the accumulation of plaque and tartar can cause gingivitis, a condition characterized by gum irritation. Gingivitis can develop into periodontitis if neglected. Periodontitis is not only known to result in tooth loss; numerous studies have also shown a connection between it and heart disease.

Keep in mind that no natural treatment should replace routine oral care. Despite the fact that there is no natural treatment or prevention for gum disease, there are several natural ways that may aid in preventing plaque formation and maintaining healthy gums.

Continue reading to discover the six natural ways to keep your gums healthy:

1. Vitamin C

Some research suggests vitamin C may help maintain healthy gums. For instance, researchers examined 12,419 adults in a study that was published in the Journal of Periodontology and discovered that those who received vitamin C had the lowest risk of periodontal disease. Consume more fruits like grapefruit, oranges, kiwis, mangoes, papayas, strawberries, red peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cantaloupe to help you get enough vitamin C.

2. Lifestyle

Several lifestyle decisions may also improve the health of your gums. For example, quitting smoking and stopping tobacco usage can significantly decrease your risk of getting gum disease. There is some evidence that stress management can aid in maintaining healthy gums. If you see symptoms of gum disease, visit your dental center.

3. Neem

Neem is an Indian evergreen tree that has a special extract that is used in ayurvedic medicine and has been shown to have antibacterial properties. A short study on the relationship between neem and gum health was released in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine in 2014. In this study, mouthwashes with neem, mango, or chlorhexidine (an antiseptic present in many varieties of mouthwash) were used twice daily for three weeks by 105 kids (aged 12 to 15). The results showed that all three mouthwash versions were efficient at lowering plaque and preventing gingivitis.

4. Tea Tree Oil

According to a 2006 article in Clinical Microbiology Reviews, tea tree oil may help treat gingivitis.  Select a toothpaste that has tea tree oil as an ingredient if you plan to use it to enhance the health of your gums. Using homemade tea tree oil dental treatments or ingesting undiluted tea tree oil can both be harmful.

5. Cranberry

According to some research, cranberries may help prevent gum disease by keeping bacteria from adhering to your teeth. Additionally, a preliminary 2013 study in the Journal of Periodontal Research raises the possibility that substances in cranberries may help control periodontitis-related inflammation.

6. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil around your mouth for approximately 15 minutes at a time. Although there is little information on the health benefits of oil pulling, a few small studies, including a clinical trial that was published in the Indian Journal of Dental Research in 2009, have suggested that oil pulling may lessen plaque buildup and provide some gingivitis protection. Don't forget that by brushing, flossing, and getting your teeth professionally cleaned, you can maintain your dental health.
