Backlinks are links from a page on one website to another. If someone links to your site, then you have a backlink from them. When you link to another website, they have a backlink from you.
What are Backlinks?
Backlinks (also known as "incoming links", "incoming links", or "one-way links") are links from one website to another page. Google and other major search engines consider backlinks "votes" for a particular page. Pages with a high number of backlinks tend to have a high level of organic search engines. For example, here is a link from Forbes to my website. Because that link points directly to the page on my website, "backlink".
How do backlinks work?
A backlink is a signal to Google that someone is finding your content relevant. However, different types of backlinks have different effects. The anchor text associated with the link will affect the way Google crawls the link, as well other features such as its placement on the page - the links listed above have an added effect.
However, the main factors contributing to the backlink effect on your site are the website from which it is derived, measured by the acronym ART: authority, rating/site loyalty - .edu and .gov sites with particularly high authority); compliance, a rating of how the site that hosts the link relates to the content, and trust, which is not Google's official metrics, but related to how well the site plays on search terms (i.e. does not sell links) and provides good content.
If you want to increase your ranking on Google, focus on building authoritative, relevant, and trusted links. So if you are a plumber, try to find links to well-known (authorized) pipelines - as well as (related) construction sites that do not include black hat (reliable) SEO techniques.
Bottom lines
Finding unique and authoritative links is important for getting high-quality search engine results pages (SERPs) and improving your SEO completely.
Google's algorithm for link testing has emerged in recent years, focusing on quality links, not quantity. This has created a very challenging process of getting high-quality backlinks within your SEO strategy.
