Devil Barnett detective thriller #8
By Teddy Hayes
Eleanor Rigby was the subject of a hit song by The Beatles from the mid 60’s. So what does a detective novel have to do with this song?
The author Teddy Hayes has woven The Beatles’ mysterious character into a who-dun-it with lots of imaginative twists and turns.
Without spoiling it for the reader, this book resembles a Hitchcockian story, in that Eleanor Rigby is seen through the eyes of others, similar to how the main character is seen in the Alfred Hitchcock Academy Award winning psychological thriller “Rebecca”. This element increases the mystery in a way that keeps the reader turning the pages and constantly asking questions.
The story is set in New York City amid the Harlem community of theatre and vice. Hayes is clever not to give away too much too soon. He keeps the reader guessing and trying to figure out who has done what to whom and for what reasons. The detective Devil Barnett ex-CIA assassin turned private eye is a smooth operator who slowly untangles the truth with the skill of a someone who understands people and how to make them tell what they often want to hide. Yet in spite of themselves they drop clues that lead to the solving of the crime.
This book is both engaging and entertaining with a touch of the classic film noir. High marks all around for the eighth novel in the Devil Barnett series “The Killing of Eleanor Rigby”.
