Khartoum (October 28, 2021) – Sudan is a culturally diverse country with a remarkable history and a rich archaeological heritage. Throughout the millennia, Sudan has served as a zone of contact among the peoples of sub-Saharan and central Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Arab world. From the earliest times, the River Nile and its tributaries served as a corridor through which people, goods and ideas circulated between the south and north.
Mr. Ahmed Abdellatif, an avid art collector, has always had a strong interest in the arts and culture of Sudan. His most notable contribution was his involvement in the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project which took place in 2008. In partnership with New Holland Construction, one of CTC Group’s longstanding business partners, the project aimed to rescue archaeological sites endangered by the construction of Merowe Dam. The project’s ambition and the inherited archeological risks as a result of the Dam were highlighted in an event held at the British Museum attended by Mr. Ahmed Amin as well as Professor Yusuf Fadul, Chairman of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums as well as members of the Sudanese press.
Some of the Rock Gongs salvaged from the site have been donated by the Directorate of Antiquities and Museums and are exhibited at the British Museum in London. A rock gong is a lithophone found in Africa, Asia, and Europe and is a slab of rock that vibrate with a ringing tone when struck and which also shows indisputable evidence of having been used as percussion instruments.
