Lord Murshed to attend FAC event on Gender-responsive Food Assistance

London, United Kingdom  - Confirmed by his Private Office, Monseigneur Adib Murshed is scheduled to represent the Qavloical Authority at an event on 17 June 2021 in regards to Gender-responsive Food Assistance and under the auspices of the London-based intergovernmental Food Assistance Committee.

Co-hosted by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and the United Nations' World Food Programme, the Lord Murshed is expected to be joined by representatives from the United States of America, the European Union, Australia, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, Russia and Japan as well as from civil society organizations and selected beneficiaries of food assistance.

Background

Global hunger is rising at an alarming rate. It is estimated that the total number of people who experienced acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels in 2020, will exceed 2019’s high of 135 million people. The devastating effects of COVID-19 with intensified conflicts, on-set emergencies, the desert locust upsurge and economic crisis have further amplified the urgency of food assistance to the affected communities – particularly for women and girls.

Current evidence indicates fundamental linkages between gender inequality, gender-based violence  (GBV) and hunger. Women and girls are vulnerable on all dimensions of food security – availability, access,  utilization and stability. Harmful gendered social norms mean that women and girls often eat last and  least, and have less control over resources, access to education and political representation. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing gender inequalities and key risk factors for violence against  women and girls, including economic and food insecurity, unemployment, domestic violence, sexual  exploitation and negative coping strategies such as survival sex and child early forced marriage. Despite these intersected and complementary obstacles, women and girls play a crucial role in guaranteeing food  security and the nutritional well-being for their households and communities. On average, rural women  account for nearly half the agricultural workforce and food systems while being the primary caretaker of  their family. Targeted food assistance with integrated gender-programming to respond to the immediate  food and nutrition needs of women and girls of vulnerable populations, while addressing the gender  inequalities they face and promote their empowerment is timely.

Food Assistance Committee (FAC)

The Food Assistance Committee (FAC) is an international intergovernmental organization founded by the Food Assistance Convention. The Food Assistance Convention (FAC) represents a continued commitment by its 16 Parties to contribute to global food security, and to improve the ability of the international community to respond to emergency food situations and other food needs of developing countries. Through commitment to cooperation and collaboration, Parties to the FAC seek to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of food assistance in saving lives, reducing hunger and improving the nutritional status of the most vulnerable populations.

World Food Programme (WFP)

The World Food Programme is the food-assistance branch of the United Nations. It is the world's largest humanitarian organization, the largest one focused on hunger and food security, and the largest provider of school meals. Founded in 1961, it is headquartered in Rome and has offices in over 80 countries.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB)

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is a partnership of 15 Canadian churches and church-based agencies working together to end global hunger. The CFGB works with locally-based organizations in developing countries to meet emergency food needs, achieve long-term solutions to hunger and work to foster informed action by Canadians and governments to support this international cause.

Qavloical Authority (QAV)

The Qavloical Authority is a sovereign polity and diplomatic entity that was founded by members of the Rasūlid dynasty. The polity is led by the hereditary Lord of the Rasulid Order who is, inter alia, the ex officio Director-General of the Qavloical Assembly. The Authority has a number of entities and bodies under its laws that have been given mandates and purposes which are usually of a humanitarian nature.

Monseigneur Adib Murshed

Adib Murshed of the Rasulids (born as "Adib Murshed of Phocid") is a politician, legislator, diplomat, aristocrat, business magnate, investor, philanthropist, Murjite jurist, scholar, theologian, philosopher and polymath who is best known as the 1st Director-General of the Qavloical Authority and the 34th Sovereign of the Qavloical People. He co-founded the Mucho Holdings Company and Lazirica Ventures among a number of other corporations. Lord Murshed is recognized as a radical internationalist and a staunch social libertarian anarcho-capitalist. Born as the 4th Earl of Plasmaine and a Royal Prince of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire, Adib has, since 2020, served as the Lord of the Rasulid Order and the Highest Commander of the Ahl al-Waʿd. In April 2021,  Adib also became the Deputy Speaker of the Permanent Synod of the Rite.
