British artist David Roman specializes in producing dynamic and energetic artworks of world class athletes. His diverse subjects have included Serena Williams, Michael Jordan, Jesse Owens, Roger Federer, Jessica Ennis, Conor McGregor and Misty Copeland. While Roman’s painted subjects may be figurative, each canvas is painted with vivid abstractions of power and strength. In Roman’s art the beauty of movement can be expressed as elegant ribbons of colour or powerful blots of black ink. These unique abstractions capture both the joy of movement and the grit and determination that goes into becoming world class athletes.
Roman graduated with a degree in Fine Art & Illustration from Coventry University in 2013. A prolific painter and muralist, his work has since been included in popular exhibitions across the UK, Europe and the US. In 2017 Roman had his first solo show, called JUST MOVE, which took place at The Works Gallery, Birmingham. Working predominantly in Watercolour, but also skilled with oils and resins, Roman is in demand for private commissions for collectors and also collaborations with the likes of Reebok, the governing body of British Gymnastics and the National Bodybuilding Association.
His latest collection of paintings is called Place of Power and explores the body in motion and the rituals of training from an almost nostalgic perspective. Responding to the UK lockdown Roman has channeled his frustrations and energy into his latest artworks. Like most of us, Roman has struggled to keep active throughout the ongoing coronavirus crisis. With the gyms closed and people forced to keep active in-doors his new work focuses on the simple and almost religious act of training; the surging adrenaline and the physical and psychological stresses that eventually give way to euphoria.
Place of Power is made up of six paintings (16 x 24” acrylic on wood panels) which will be available to purchase at davidromanart.com Limited edition prints and posters will also be available in two sizes (M 12x16” and XL 33x47”).
