A Helium Leak Detectors, sometimes referred to as a Mass Spectrometer Leak Detector(MSLD) is used to detect and measure the volume of leaks into or from a gas or material containing device. The tracer chemical, helium, is then injected into an experimental test piece which is connected to the leak detection sensor. The results of the test are displayed on the monitor, which, in most cases, will show an icon with a red dot. If this indicator is present then the leak detection system is alerted and action can be taken.
Helium is a highly volatile element. As such it is extremely flammable and must be handled with great care. Helium leaks present either direct or indirect problems and should be dealt with accordingly. Indirect problems in most cases will not require immediate attention but direct problems will if left undetected and will only have to be dealt with in a later stage of testing. The use of helium leak detectors is therefore not recommended for direct testing unless absolutely necessary.
A test gas helium leakage detector is made up of an activated coil and an external dosimeter. The induction and passive parts of the detector work by creating a small electrical current when the test gas is present. The current generated by the coil causes a change in the conductivity of the material being tested. This change is an electrical signal that can be deciphered by the various electronic testing devices available today.
The most common applications of Helium Leak Detectors are air testing where the quality of the atmosphere in a vacuum chamber is questionable. It has been found that the level of Helium in the air can affect the performance of various mechanical and electronic systems. In fact, when the quality of the atmosphere is good, the performance of any machine is enhanced. It is for this reason that industrial plants and factories use Helium Leak Detectors to measure the quality of their Helium.
Helium leak detectors have also found their use in the aviation industry. Since low levels of Helium can prevent the aircraft from flying properly, it is imperative that the aircraft fuel have the correct level of Helium in it. This can help reduce the risk of engine failure as well as increasing the fuel efficiency. Therefore, high quality Helium leaks testing have been essential in the aviation industry.
Another important application of Helium Leak Detectors is in medical applications. Detectors have been used for carrying out patient exams. Helium is a non-flammable gas, which makes it a good choice for conducting Helium leak testing. Another major use of Helium Leak Detectors is in the production of certain gas compressors. These high-quality gas compressors are generally required in industrial and commercial settings to help increase the efficiency of the device as well as its reliability and durability.
Helium leakage is also necessary in the building sector, where high-quality Pneumatic leak testing vacuum systems are essential. Such systems help ensure that there are no leaks inside buildings. High pressure systems are installed inside such buildings to ensure that there are no leakages. The high level of efficiency and durability of these machines make them ideal for industries dealing with highly confidential information.
Helium leak detectors are generally made up of durable and rugged materials such as stainless steel and other metallic alloys. They offer a long life span and are designed to withstand harsh working conditions. Some types of Helium Leak Detectors include; tube and flexi-tube models, which can detect gas leaks within a very narrow gap. And, there are specially designed ducted models for precise detection of confined space or areas that are vulnerable to pressures of up to 600 psi. All these different types of Helium Leak Detectors have different ways of functioning and the way in which they operate differs too. It is therefore, important to purchase the proper type of Helium Leak Detection device for your specific purposes.
