Today when the world has become global village due to massive IT revolution, every sphere of life is touched by mini to grand innovations. This technological advancement has a great impact on modern warfare. Geopolitical development with technological advancements has raised many fears as well. This era can be called as an ‘era of technology’ so if you are living in 21st century you have to be adaptable to the technological advancements in every field.
Technology has been the primary source of military innovation throughout the history. Technology has entirely changed the dimensions of every sector including postal services, telegraphy, and weapons. Airplane and tanks. Conventional warfare is almost cease to exist because of innovation in military strategies.
Military strategies have changed the dimensions of war in every context. However, technology is effective only when supported by relevant doctrines and only under the circumstances where the threat is well defined and the strategy is well established.Stratetgy is the key in any warfare. We can see many examples where strategy became the reason for success. In World War II Germany lost the battle at the end due to the lack of tactical strategy in spite of having heavy machinery at that time. The strategy mainly include the moral, economic and social aspects against the adversaries.
Undoubtedly, technology has mould the conventional warfare into more like a virtual warfare. But in almost all cases, history has witnessed it’s not the technology that matters but the tactful implication of technology with a certain strategy gives a desired result. There are many countries in the world which have state of the art weaponry but lack the strategy to implement it on the battlefield.
The areas of technology which have penetrated well in warfare include robotics and autonomous unmanned system; artificial intelligence; biotechnology, including synthetic and systems biology; the cognitive neurosciences; nanotechnology, including stealth meta-materials; additive manufacturing (3D printing); and the intersection of each with information and computing technologies, i.e., cyber-everything. In today’s world, recognition of technology with a sense of exploiting it is far important than just having access to a technology because without smart implication, access is of no use.
This race of technology has made every country equipped with the latest weaponry system starting from developed countries like USA, Russia, and China to developing including Middle East and south Asia. Every country is concerned about its security due to geostrategic position, so each is competing in this domain. In South Asia we can take the example of Pakistan and India who are indulged in a cut throat competition of weaponry and warfare strategies in order to balance the power. During a visit to the Kurchatov Institute, Russian President Vladimir Putin commented “This [nanotechnology] could be the key to developing new, modern, and super-effective military systems. “He warned of “[a] new round of the arms race is developing in the world,” while calling for the development of Russian science, including nanotechnology, which could be used to develop new types of weapons.
For warfare with modern technology, the term ‘Internet of battle things’ is also used that encompasses a variety of intelligent networks competing for dominance on battlefield. Some of the technological advancements which can be implied in modern warfare are as follows:
Robot wars imply that no need of soldier is required on battlefield. These robots have the technology of Artificial Intelligence in them which are free of human error but can capable of catastrophic mistakes on their own.
Smart weapons imply the concept of auto-targetting.Auto-targeting would add efficiency to the OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide and Action) loop decision cycle that guides terms of engagement in combat.
Social media has emerged as most powerful tool in modern warfare. Social media has in the past helped mobilize grassroots protests, but has also been used as a weapon of confusion.
Russia has tactfully employed the tool of social media in a conflict in Ukraine where Russian forces were deployed. Russian state used Twitter and Facebook to disseminate the propaganda and charged the masses to join the battle on ground.
To sense any change is one of the important factor in any warfare. Previously large heavy electronic were used on the battlefield which are now replaced by the devices installed on unit mobiles.
Every country is making progress in IT.Different products are being launched and sold on internet ranging from kitchen products to office products. Suppose you want to buy Digital Pressure Cooker, you can simply check the internet, visit e-commerce website and can shop the cooker sitting at home.
