• Equal is supporting Young Women’s Trust, a feminist organisation working to achieve economic justice for young women, particularly during the COVID-19 health crisis
• Equal will be donating 2% of all proceeds from the Series 1 Collection to Young Women’s Trust
New British fashion brand Equal is the trendy ethical and eco-conscious workwear brand for the professional woman, to enter the global market, focusing on quality, style, and affordability. Equal was founded by Anjali Obhrai and Sunita Harji.
With the global impact of COVID-19, offices have closed shop and working from home has become the new norm in 2020. This has presented numerous challenges for the launch of Equal.
UK Businesses Reopening
Co-founder Anjali Obhrai said: “Obviously this has been a setback for us. The shutdown of corporate environments has reduced demand for workwear. Now government restrictions are lifting, and workplaces are producing roadmaps and implementing processes to safely transition their employees back to work. There are a lot of women out there who are going to need a brand new wardrobe!”
Affordable Luxury Workwear
The two entrepreneurs have always felt that there is something missing in the fashion market: affordable luxury workwear. The fashion industry has heavily overlooked workwear when the average person spends a third of their life within a professional environment. Over the last decade company cultures and dress codes have evolved so dramatically, and yet clothing brands have not adapted to this shift. These entrepreneurs have found a way to keep your work wardrobe looking fresh and relevant.
Co-founder Sunita Harji comments: “Working within a corporate industry opened our eyes about the pains and struggles women face when dressing for work. We want women to go onto our online store and easily find ‘that dress’ or ‘that pencil skirt’ they’ve been looking for. Over the next 12 months we will be looking to expand our product range to cater to petite, tall and curvy women.”
Anjali and Sunita started their business venture by saving their hard earned money while working full time within the financial services sector. Their first collection consists of 5 statement pieces that Equal believes every woman needs as essentials in her work wardrobe. Each design comes in two colours and sells for under £100.
Harji said: “When a customer wears Equal, we want her to feel strong, confident and ready to tackle her working day, without having to spend a small fortune to get there.”
Equal feels very strongly about being an ethical brand that protects human working rights. The products are made within ethical and compliant European facilities, supporting family-owned ateliers. The co-founders did not want to create a brand that contributed to environmental damage and does not see themselves as ‘fast-fashion’.
Ethically Conscious Brand
Co-founder Anjali Obhrai talks about Equal’s carefully selected manufacturers and FSC-certified packaging: “We are working extremely hard to create an ethically conscious brand that our customers will be proud to wear. It’s also important to play our role in protecting our planet while we’re doing what we love; this is why we have selected materials for our workwear with a high proportion of natural fibres. Our packaging was sourced from an eco-alliance company and is 100% recyclable and FSC certified. In addition to this, our global delivery partner offsets carbon emissions by contributing to climate protection initiatives.”
Giving Back And Supporting Women
With 2020 being an extremely devastating year for most people, Equal feels passionately about giving back and will be donating 2% of proceeds from its Series 1 Collection to Young Women’s Trust. This organisation is working to achieve economic justice for young women. In addition, it has set up an emergency fund to assist women whose jobs and livelihoods have been impacted by COVID-19 in getting back into employment.
Sunita Harji added: “We all need to be role models and set an example for young women all over the world and give them something to look forward to in their bright futures. It’s important for us to recognise the impact that discrimination in the workplace has on women’s mental health, careers, and finances - whether that is sexism, racism, or general bullying. That is why we as an organisation we will take the necessary actions to ensure equality in every aspect from our own employees, third party suppliers and models”.
