What is throat cancer?
The cancer of the voice box, the vocal cords, tonsils, oropharynx and other parts of the throat is referred to as throat cancer. Throat cancer is not very common as compared to other cancers. The studies of the National Cancer Institute provide an estimate that pharyngeal cancer will be found in 1.1% of the adults throughout their lifetime and laryngeal cancer will be diagnosed in 0.3% of the adults in their lifetime. The throat cancer can be of various types which involve the growth of abnormal cells within the patient, namely, squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, pharyngeal cancer (nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypo pharynx) and laryngeal cancer.
Signs and symptoms of throat cancer
Throat cancer is difficult to detect in its early stages. However, the doctor takes a sample of throat cells or tissues which is required for biopsy. Biopsy is essential to be done before the treatment begins. Various signs and symptoms of throat cancer include trouble in swallowing, change in voice of the patient, sore throat, and wheezing, constant urge to clear the throat, loss of weight, continuous cough or cough up blood, ear pain, and swollen lymph nodes in neck, hoarseness and bad breath.
The various diagnostic techniques include conventional biopsy, fine needle aspiration, endoscopic biopsy, PET scan, MRI, CT scan, X-rays, Barium swallow, etc.
Stages of throat cancer
If the cancerous cells are found by the doctor in the throat of the patient, he will ask for further tests to identify the stage of the cancer. Following are the stages of throat cancer:
Stage 0: This means that the tumor of the throat has not invaded to the other organs.
Stage 1: In this stage, the tumor is limited to the throat and is less than 7 cm.
Stage 2: At this stage, the tumor might be larger than 7 cm but remains limited to the throat.
Stage 3: When the tumor has grown and spread to the nearby tissues and organs, it is stage # of throat cancer.
Stage 4: This last stage of throat cancer indicates that the tumor has spread to the lymph nodes and distant organs.
