In 2009, Dr. (Prof.) Paolo Zamboni hypothesized that Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI), a chronic state of impaired cerebral or cervical venous drainage, maybe a cause in pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS).
Dr. Zamboni introduced a connection between CCSVI and MS. In his study, he found that in people with MS, the blood flow from the brain and spinal cord was abnormal, whereas Blood flow in people without MS was normal. Dr. Zamboni suggested that in some MS patients, narrow veins in the neck cause iron accumulation in the brain and spinal cord.
The accumulation of iron in the neck vein can initiate an inflammatory response that can be damaging to the central nervous system in patients suffering from MS. Accordingly; he theorized that CCSVI could be a potential cause of MS.
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that can affect your brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves and cause problems with vision, balance, muscle control, and other essential functions of the body. Liberation treatment is also referred to as CCSVI is altogether a new approach towards the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis that is done with venous angioplasty.
Technically, Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty of Extracranial Veins termed Liberation treatment is recommended as an alternative treatment for MS. There are two types of Liberation treatment, i.e. through Balloon Angioplasty and Stents.
Depending upon the severity and to prevent re-stenoses of veins sometimes balloon angioplasty and venoplasty, i.e. stenting may also be used together.
Liberation Treatment for CCSVI is a surgical procedure for patients who have Multiple Sclerosis. This procedure is called Venous Angioplasty that opens up the narrowed veins by inserting a small balloon into the vein to clear venous stenosis.
Liberation Therapy, i.e. Balloon Venous angioplasty, helps dilation of stenosed jugular vein to clear the blockage and restore blood flow from the brain and spinal cord. Improvement and Increase in blood circulation reduce inflammation in the brain and reduce symptoms of MS. That-is-why, surgeons perform Liberal Treatment to help reduce pain and other neurological problems.
The success rate of liberation treatment varies from patient to patient and largely depends upon the extent of damage caused due to blockage of veins from the brain and spinal cord. Being a minimally invasive procedure Liberation Procedure you are required to remain in the hospital for 5 days after surgery for monitoring, post-operative and follow-up care.
You will be required to get yourself checked up once again after 3 days for observing the progress and condition of bruise before you start your normal daily activities. However, it is always better to consult your surgeon before starting substantial duty activities.
