Dharmasena’s Mistake in the Cricket World Cup Finals

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 had an electric finals match that left the entire cricket community still reeling from the events. England and New Zealand’s last finals match held in Lord’s went down as one of the most iconic matches in cricket history. Both teams tied at 241 runs so a Super Over had to be played. The Super Over ended with both teams still tied with 15 runs. England eventually went home as world champions, as they had a higher boundary count than New Zealand.
The Cricket World Cup finals is one of the most exciting and closest games ever played. Fans initially claimed that the semi-finals match between New Zealand and India is the tournament’s most exciting highlight but it was quickly overshadowed with the events of the finals match.
With England winning by a very small margin, the aftermath of the finals match was as energetic as its beginning. Many fans from all over the world raised the issue that finals umpire Kumar Dharmasena made an error call. Dharmasena gave England six runs from the last over of the finals match when it should have been five.
Dharmasena admitted his error almost a week after the World Cup finals took place. A former Sri Lankan cricket player, Dharmasena stated that it was a hard call and admitted his mistake. The umpire continued to mention that he had to make the decision without the privilege of watching a replay of the events from a TV screen. Therefore, it is harder to make quick calls in their situation.
Dharmasena’s error call does not change the fact that England is still the newest World Cup champions. England still won the Cricket World Cup finals. Only this time, the entire cricket community knows they won with lesser runs than what was originally called.
