Sometimes going off to college right out of high school is not the best option for some.

Sometimes going off to college right out of high school is not the best option for some. Transitioning to adulthood is challenging and can be overwhelming. Sometimes young adults are not ready for that type of independence immediately. As a parent, it’s important that you recognize that even if your young adult isn’t ready for this step, there are other options to help get them on their way. Therapeutic alternatives for gap year may be the best option for your young adult.e

Let’s Talk Therapy

Therapeutic programs are able to provide young adults with the people, place, and experiences that allow young adults to gain insight, practice healthy independence, realign goals and learn new tools to help them launch into adulthood. In a lot of ways these types of programs will try to mirror the realities of adulthood to better prepare the individuals for a smoother transition.

Depending on the program college credits may even be an option. Through education tracks that support a growth mindset and allow students to reimagine their academic potential. These courses may also implement practical skills that young adults can pick up on and use in every avenue of their lives. These skills can include:

  • Communicating Emotions
  • Managing Conflict
  • Improving Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
  • Enhancing Leadership Presence
  • Empowering Others
  • Coaching and Giving Feedback

The ways in which therapeutic alternatives for gap year can be beneficial are never-ending. Your child will be encouraged to explore their personal goals, discuss challenges, and reflect on their successes so far. They will be given individual therapy which allows professionals to help them create a plan of success tailored to their needs.

Finding the Best Fit

It’s important to note that no one program is created equal. Each program will be created slightly different to meet a variety of needs of young adults who need therapeutic care. You should not just sign your child up for the first one you find on the internet. Do your research, read different program’s mission statements and what they offer. Consider your child and what environment they would grow best in. Talk to professionals within the program. This is not a small decision and should not be taken lightly. However, it can be the best decision you help your young adult make.
