(April 26, 2019) – Meditation and similar practices (including Yoga) are identified as alternatives to traditional, customary medicine which originated in the West. These have consequently been reported to be opted for by 30% of adults and 12% of children presently residing in the United States. Moreover, the proportion of adults practicing meditation rose from 4.1% in 2012 to 14.2% in 2017 while the proportion of children rose from 0.6% to 5.4% in the same time period.Reasons for such use are stated by Richard Nahin, the lead epidemiologist at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, who writes in an email, “Many people turn to complementary health approaches, such as yoga and meditation, in order to help with symptom management, such as pain. As well, they turn to these approaches for a general sense of wellbeing.”(Thomas, 2018)
Such practices, especially meditation, have been researched to promote Selbstreflexion or self-reflection, mindfulness and watchfulness. Their development has often been rooted in a Buddhist context but can no longer be identified as a solely religious practice. Various centres across the country utilise the term ‘secular mindfulness’ for the meditative practices that they opt for.
