Young babies who are teething will often be fussier than normal due to the discomfort of new teeth beginning to poke through their gums. You might notice their cheeks look red or flushed, that they are drooling more frequently or that their gums look red and swollen. Other symptoms include rubbing their ear on the same side as the erupting tooth and your baby may be more restless during the day and night. They may be less inclined to feed. There are various ways you can help keep them more comfortable during this time and which include:
Keeping a cold teething ring in your fridge can help soothe sore gums or alternatively you can use a cold metal spoon. Your baby can bite down on the teething ring or can hold a spoon.
Another solution is to give them a cold damp washcloth that you’ve kept in the freezer or fridge as some babies find it enjoyable to chew on a clean washcloth and again the cold will help soothe their gums.
Teething biscuits can help calm down a fractious baby but when choosing a biscuit, make sure it is healthy and age-appropriate for your child. Provided these biscuits are only used occasionally, they shouldn’t have any long-lasting effects on your child’s dental health. You can also use frozen bananas which make a nice sweet treat. It’s important to make sure that if you do give your child anything to eat that you stay with them at all times to help prevent them from choking.
A clean baby sock makes a great receptacle for small ice chips as it can easily be tied off. Just crush ice cubes until they form small chips and place them in a clean sock. Using a sock helps prevent your baby’s gums from becoming too cold.
This is the easiest way to soothe is a teething baby and it works surprisingly well. Gently massaging your child’s gums can help quite a bit as the pressure will relieve pain while the contact will also provide them with some comfort.
If your baby is drooling more than normal then make sure you wipe it away as soon as you can using a soft cotton cloth. You may need to be even more gentle than normal as their chin could be sore. Sometimes it can be helpful to use a barrier cream to protect your child and to help prevent a rash.
