(January 08, 2019) - So many people want to start a business and January is the perfect time. But what to do? Deciding what kind of business to start seems to be the most difficult decision of all.
Why do people want to work for themselves? The benefits are endless. They can be their own boss, make their own hours, do what they love to do and get paid for it. But what do they love to do? And how do they make money doing it? This is where VentureMom, Holly Hurd comes to the rescue.
“I’m kind of a venture detective. I can talk with someone at a cocktail party and within no time I’ve come up with a plan for them to start a business. It usually starts with someone telling me they helped someone do something or made something for someone. I can show them how something so simple can be turned into a business.” The idea is the hardest thing to come up with.
Women around the country have reached out to Hurd and come away with a clear path on what business to start. Hurd understands the need to create something around a passion, and the desire for something simple. In her interviews with hundreds of VentureMoms over the last several years, she has featured tons of ideas and can point wannabe entrepreneurs in the right direction to get started.
What is her process? Holly first has you fill out a questionnaire. “This is where each potential entrepreneur goes on a journey to figure out what they enjoy and what they’re good at. I have a process within the questionnaire that helps me in discovering a person’s hidden talents. And then I develop a way to use that talent to show them how to make money.” She calls this process self-discovery for her clients.
The next step is an hour on the phone with VentureMom. “This is so exciting because I get to help someone find a new business idea. So many people don’t realize they have something in their lives already that they can use to start a side gig and make money.”
For example, Hurd spoke with one woman and discovered she loves to cook and makes great spiced pecans. Hurd was able to help her come up with a plan to start small and sell her spiced nuts at the local markets with plans to expand as demand grows. Another client started a dog walking and dog sitting business in her neighborhood. Hurd was able to help her structure her business around her other commitments.
Getting the word out is super easy now too. Hurd believes you can start a 6-figure business with one email. “Telling everyone what you are offering is so easy now and it’s free. With one email, you can get your first client.” Hurd calls her process of helping someone come up with a business idea VentureHour.
