When Might I Need Chimney Repair?
Information may not be reliable

8/13/2015
Many people will try to wait a long while before they go ahead and get chimney repair done, because they worry that it’s going to be a hassle that they don’t want to have to deal with.

That being said, there are definitely a few cases where you’re going to have to consider getting chimney repair performed on your chimney, no matter what sort of condition that it may be in. Here are some of the main reasons that you may have to consider getting chimney repair done.
Your Chimney is Older and Needs an Upgrade
This is the most common problem that results in people needing to get chimney cap repair done. No matter how long you have owned your home, the chimney most likely has been there since the house was built. Sure, the chimney may have been fine when it got installed, but it may not pass a home inspection if one were to be performed today. So what are you supposed to do about this? In short, your chimney may be inneed some repair, so you may need to have someone come in and take care of the problem for you. A complete replacement is not usually necessary, but when your chimney repair professional comes in to take care of the issue, they can give you some ideas as to what the best course of action may be for you and your family’s safety and security.
Your Chimney Seems to Be Leaking or Causing Other Issues
Soyou know that the chimney is up to standards that have been in place today. But when you start a fire in it, it seems to be running a little higher than it used to. You may feel a bit more of a draft when you put your hand in the chimney area (don’t do this when there’s a fire in there), or you may notice that there is smoke coming out of areas other than the cap. If this is the issue that you’re dealing with, then you may have a leak or a hole somewhere. These can happen for a number of reasons, but mainly because the bricks (or whatever other material your chimney is made from) are crumbling or the material that is holding them together is starting to disintegrate. Either way, you need to get those holes repaired. The backdraft couldpotentially be very dangerous, and you don’t want to be in a situation where you end up with a house fire that hurts your loved ones and everything that you possess.
The Bricks Won’t Stay in Place
This is not the same as the last issue that we talked about though sometimesyour bricks may shift around without causing any holes or gaps where issues could occur. If there has been any work, loud noises or other disturbances around your home, the chimney may have been knocked off center resulting in a couple of shifting bricks in a couple of locations. This may not necessarily require an entire rebuild, but rather some securing of the current setup.
The Cap Isn’t Functioning Properly
The cap is the area over the top of your chimney that allows for the smoke to disperse, and prevents debris and living creatures from getting into your chimney and making it their home. Your cap is vital for keeping your chimney clear thus keeping your family safe. If there’s a crack or there seems to be junk getting into your chimney, then you may need to call a chimney repair company to come in and repair the issue for you before it gets worse and causes any additional problems. You may have to replace the whole cap, but that’s an inexpensive and quick job to have done.
If you’re chimney is in need of any sort ofrepair, don’t try to take care of it on your own. Contact an experienced chimney repair professional to come in and take care of the issue for you as soon as possible. That way, you know that the job is going to be done correctly from the beginning, and you don’t have to worry about additional problems cropping up in case there were errors or other problems during the time that your installation occurred.
