The Hathaway House was built in 1844 by Major-General Samuel Gilbert Hathaway, the manor house was the hub of his eight thousand acre estate as well as his political career.
From here he managed a large farm with such notables as the Rockefellers as business acquaintances, while at the same time being active in politics as a senator and congressman.
His home was enhanced by marble fireplaces, pier mirrors and crystal chandeliers. Major-General Hathaway was visited by many of the early aristocrats, as well as three presidents, for whom he served as an advisor.
The mansion looks as it did for more than 150 years. The General built well with walls of stone 2 feet thick. We have restored and maintained it to enhance your visit, and look forward to hosting your event while you enjoy a bit of the past.
A period less hurried and filled with more warmth.
