Speech tip: When the invitation says RSVP
When an invitation to a party or special celebration comes by mail or by email, you may see the letters RSVP.
The expression RSVP comes from French, but it is also very much a part of the English language.
RSVP stands for the French expression Rpondez sil vous plat (Please respond.) The host is asking you to reply to the invitation. Will you be attending or not?
Unlike French speakers, English speakers may use RSVP as a noun or a verb in a sentence. For example, one may ask, Did you RSVP? and the answer could be Yes, I RSVPd yesterday, or I sent my RSVP yesterday. A host might say, I still havent received 10 RSVPs for the party. Say the names of the four letters, with a slight emphasis on P, the last letter.
How to respond when the invitation says RSVP

Speech tip: The black cat vowel of English
The vowel sound in black cat is a singularly English sound. (We often also call it the fat cat vowel.) When we say this sound, the body of the tongue is flat, low, and forward in the mouth. If you take a Confident Speech accent program, youll master this sound! Your English pronunciation will be clearer and easier to understand!

Effective speakers are like good hosts
When you speak, think of it as a party. You are the host. Your listeners are the “guests.” Try to make the “party” an informative experience that is comfortable for your guests!
Be cordial to your "guests." As the speaker, try to anticipate their needs. You'll want to give them enough background information, but don't give them more information than they can easily absorb. Your manner of speaking should be varied, just like the flavors of a good meal!
