Tae Kwon Do is considered to be the most effective fighting art ever developed. It is a physical science, where each move carries maximum power, speed, accuracy and balance. Literally translated from Korean, Tae means “foot” or “to strike with the foot,” Kwon means “fist” or “to strike with the hand,” and Do means “discipline” or “art.” Therefore, taken together Tae Kwon Do means “foot, fist, art” or “the art of kicking and punching.” Modern Tae Kwon Do is a unique form of martial arts that combines the flowing movements of numerous Chinese styles with the quick movements of various Japanese systems.
Learning the art provides three benefits. First, it can be an exciting competitive sport for the student who wants to achieve physical fitness. Second, training at the institute helps the student to develop self-confidence and achieve mental and physical balance. Lastly, the student learns one of the most effective forms of self-defense known and gradually develops the discipline necessary to remain level-headed if confronted with a dangerous situation.
Group effort and team work is emphasized. As Tae Kwon Do trainees, the students are taught to move together within a group. At Almeda Tae Kwon Do, the student usually earns a yellow belt within three months. However, the more time devoted to achieving this goal, the more quickly it is attained. Once the student demonstrates proficiency in the basic stances, blocks, strikes and kicks, they can begin to practice sparring (free-fighting), which is greatly emphasized at the school.
One of the most spectacular aspects of the martial arts occurs when students demonstrate their power and control by breaking wood or brick with their bare hands and legs. Breaking demonstrates the heights that can be achieved when the student learns the ability to focus power at a specific point in space.
Students from the Tae Kwon Do Institute have the opportunity to test their skills level with students from other schools by competing in numerous tournaments annually.
As students advance in Tae Kwon Do, the color of the belt becomes darker until the level of black belt is achieved.
