Rose of Sharon, or althea, will grow in a variety of soils and can tolerate a wide ph range of 6.5 to 7.5ph. Young plants are certainly less winter-hardy than older plants and might well be given special winter protection for the first few years after transplanting. Some gardeners erroneously believe the plant requires a dry soil. This is not true. In fact, it is one of the first plants to show the effects of lack of water in summer.
There are single- and double-flowered varieties, ranging in color from pure white to pink, red, blue and variations with flowers as much as 4” in diameter. There are even some varieties with variegated leaves.
If the plant is let alone with little pruning, flowers may be numerous but small. If large blooms are wanted, the best way to obtain them is to prune the previous year’s shoots back considerably, leaving only 3 or 4 buds on each shoot. This is done in early spring, before leaves start to grow, and practically ruins the general appearance of the plant for a period, but the resulting flowers are unusually large and handsome.
On April 13, 2005 Mark Bezek died after a short illness. He is survived by his loving wife Sue, and four beloved children, Erin, Brian, Amy, and Alex. Mark touched our lives for almost 20 years; always a smile and a positive twist on any challenge he faced. There with a strong handshake and can-do “sparky” attitude; we will all miss “The Bez” greatly.

"Your firm is to be congratulated for the outstanding people that work for you. We recently had extensive tree and brush trimming by Mike and Kevin. They are both very professional and courteous in this work. The crews that do our lawn work are equally great in their professionalism and are to be congratulated on their work. Our only regret is that we did not have Ted Collins Associates take care of our needs years ago!"
