The Bernstein Center for Visual Performance is a professional behavioral and developmental optometry practice located in White Plains, NY. Together with our general optometry practice (Family Vision Care Associates, in the same location) we provide a complete range of optometric and vision therapy solutions for patients with vision problems.
Binocular Vision Problems
The standard 20/20 Eye Chart and Exam only tests visual acuity (sharpness) at twenty feet for each eye, separately. But, effective visual performance also depends on both eyes working together ("binocular" vision) for optimal vision and learning. Even children and adults with "normal" 20/20 vision (or corrected to 20/20 with glasses or contacts) may have significant binocular vision problems. These problems - untreated - will interfere with learning, job performance, and leisure activities:
In fact, 20 percent of all children suffer some type of binocular vision impairment which may profoundly impact their ability to learn - particularly in grades 1-4 when reading and writing are taught in progressively challenging steps. Many children are misdiagnosed with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD - without ever having the their vision checked properly!
Diagnosing Binocular Vision Problems
One of the primary goals of the Bernstein Center is to help patients identify binocular vision problems (see symptoms). While we provide a wide range of testing services, the basic evaluation tool we use is called a Comprehensive Visual Exam. It takes about an hour - and there's no eyedrops or discomfort. It's the first step toward optimal visual performance.
Visual Performance and Vision Therapy
Visual performance deficits caused by binocular vision problems are treated with glasses, contact lenses, eye patches, and Vision Therapy.
Vision Therapy involves a series of procedures and activities designed to help retrain the vision system to process input correctly. Like speech therapy or physical therapy - vision therapy is done over a period of time (typically 3 to 6 months).
