Following the tournament, we had a tremendous time at the first school kick-a-thon. Together we raised over $7,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project while doing
The day started off strong when we had all of our kids in our first group perform the maximum 400 kicks. Even our youngest kickers, Willem Bender and Matthew
Angelo, pushed through to the end to help raise money for the charity.
In our next group, Aiden Johnston showed that 600 front kicks was just too easy. He did the first 200+ kicks as spinning hook kicks on his way to doing the maximum for
his group of 600.
Not to be outdone, Gracia Acheson did one of the most amazing things I have seen as a martial artist. While pushing herself to do the full 2,000 kicks in her group, she kept pace doing a spinning hook kick-roundhouse kick combination. Meaning over the span of 40 minutes, she spun completely around 1,000 times without ever stopping.
Along the way, students, family, and teachers were amazed to see just what they could do to make a difference in the world. No matter how large or small your contributions, you all should be proud of doing your own small part.
As the winter months approach, snow can become a major factor in our lives. Most of you who have been around for years know we rarely allow the weather to affect
our classes. However, when road conditions prevent us from safely offering classes, we may close.
This year we want to make sure that students clearly understand if and when the school closes. For normal afternoon and evening classes, the answering machine message will be changed to indicate a closing at least a half an hour prior to the class start time. This should provide students the opportunity to check in before leaving for class. We also recommend that you add your name to the student email database to receive emails about these short notice closings.
With regards to morning classes, if Tuckahoe schools are closed or on a 2-hour delay, no morning classes will be held. You can check for closings by watching the
Westchester News Channel, generally channel 12, or by listening to 1230 AM.
We will always make every safe effort to be there for our students. And we appreciate your patience as we face the upcoming winter months.
Effective January 2010, we will no longer be automatically re-enrolling students at the end of their student agreement. Instead, we will be contacting you directly and setting you up on new student agreements manually.
If your current agreement is set to expire, or you have questions about it, we encourage you to contact the school directly. Sensei Jeff or Debi will be happy to help you with making changes.
This will tie into a number of new program options that we hope to offer students to better customize their training regimen. We hope to offer more avenues for students to get the training they need, when they need it, in the new year. As always, we will work to offer our students better instruction, and means to accomplish their goals.
This November we are proud to be holding our first charity Weekend for the Wounded Warrior Project. On Saturday, November 22nd we will have a Tournament for Wounded Warrior Project. This tournament will be very similar to the many Tournaments of Champions we have held at the school in the past. But the proceeds from the event will be donated to The Wounded Warrior Project.
On Sunday, we will hold a kick-a-thon fund-raiser for The Wounded Warrior Project. All of our students are encouraged to pledge to kick for the event. All of our students can ask friends and families to donate for the charity fund-raiser. Registration forms for the events will be available to explain how each aspect of the fund raising event will work.
While there are many fine charities we could have held a fund-raiser for, we choose The Wounded Warrior Project. As many of you know, the school as a whole has felt the tumultuous feelings of having a loved one called to war. It has been over two years since Sensei James was called to service, and while we are grateful that he is doing well and now stationed at the Pentagon, many more have not been as fortunate. WWP is dedicated to helping those who have been severely wounded in their service. Below is the mission statement from the WWP website.
The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors.
To raise awareness and enlist the publics aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women,
To help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and
To provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members.
Ifyou wish to learn more about the WWP, please go to www.woundedwarriorproject.com where you will be able to read about what they do for those who have given so much. I hope you all take the chance to participate in this event. In the past our tournaments have been a lot of fun and a great experience for our students. This time we hope to make the whole event more meaningful.
We will run seven events at the tournament. Three are traditional tournament events, four are special events not normally found in open tournament.

Starting in November, we will be offering a Junior Leadership program for our most advanced students. These classes will be focused on discussing leadership skills and putting them into practice.
All participants will be expected to attend each of the thirteen class sessions. In addition, each participant will be given a single class during the week that they will practice their leadership skills.
We will be limiting the size of this group to six students. You can apply for the class group if you are a red belt or higher by November the 2nd. You will be notified by November the 3rd if you have been accepted into the class.
More details on the program can be found on the application form which is available by request at the front desk.
