Established in the 1930's, this hardware store has been providing continuous service for the residents of Putnam Valley and the surrounding communities. Located at 9 Oscawana Lake Rd. since 1945, Oregon Hardware has become a fixture of the community, remembered for its "Helpful Hits by Dick" column that appeared weekly in the local newspaper. Dick Smeriglio began working there in 1953 for his brother-in-law Bill Whitehill. Dick purchased the business in 1965 and became partners with his daughter Rita Ann in 1988. He remained active in the business until March 2000, when he retired after 47 years. The business "where customers come first" is now in the hands of Rita Ann, her two sons ,Larry and Karl, and friendly and courteous employees, especially Gwen,who has been there for more than 15 years.
As the Rolling Stones sing "You can't always get what you want" but at Oregon Hardware "You get what you need".
