Columbia Tractor was incorporated as a new International Harvester Farm & Light Industrial Dealership in May 1964. The original stockholders were Jim Hamilton, Stu Kinne - active in the business Paul Tomlinson & Harold Gould, silent investors & very good friends. Paul & Harold were International Harvester Dealers in Salem & Hudson Falls N.Y. Jim Hamilton had an extensive background in Farm Equipment dealerships & experience working for International Harvester as a Zone Manager & Sales Manager.
Stu Kinne had worked for International Harvester from 1960 1964. He was appointed Zone Manager in the lower Hudson Valley in the spring of 1963. At the time there was an International Harvester dealer, William Cone, Inc. in Chatham N.Y. The principals in that dealership elected to cancel their contract with IH in the fall of 1963. Stus job was to find a replacement dealer & with the encouragement of Paul Tomlinson, decided to start Columbia Tractor, Inc. Paul & Harold remained as silent investors for a few years helping the business struggle to its feet. The first 24 years the dealership was located in Kinderhook, N.Y in a small Quonset Hut type building, which inadequate as it was, served the purpose & with the able assistance & patience of some long term employees, the dealership became a factor in the Farm Equipment business in the lower Hudson valley. Jim Hamilton retired in 1983 & in 1985 Stu purchased a vacant 400 cow free stall barn from a customer & moved it to the present site on Route 9H in Claverack, N.Y. The structure was erected & converted into the present home of Columbia Tractor, Inc. Our mission has always been to offer top quality lines of Farm & Consumer equipment to an ever expanding customer base, along with quality Parts & Service backup. We believe in taking the time to assure we are selling the customer what he needs to fit his application.
As a result of this philosophy out motto has been:
