Otitis externa is common and may affect 20 percent of dogs and 2 to 6 percent of cats. It can be acute or chronic and each should be properly diagnosed since treatment varies. Acute otitis externa refers to otitis present for only a few days and characterized by erythema and variable discharge, usually mild to moderate in quantity.
