Pat Basu, MD

Trained in Cambridge, England, Dr. Basu initially specialized in infectious diseases and tropical medicine from Royal College of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and became a member of the Royal Society of Tropical Disease and Hygiene. He traveled in South-East Asia treating viral diseases of the liver, particularly, Hepatitis-B and other parasitic liver diseases. He also pursued a special interest in liver disease and transplantation, gained expertise in London at Royal Free Hospital and became part of British Liver Trust. In the United States, he completed training at Lenox Hill Hospital and New York Downtown Hospitals in New York and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. He completed his liver research at Bronx VA Medical Center where he conducted work in alcohol-related liver disease and viral hepatitis. He also trained in endoscopic ultrasound and attended various courses from The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston as a part of Harvard Medical School and Internationally from University of AMC from Amsterdam.

Dr. Basu is board certified and presently sits as a scientific advisory member of the American Liver Foundation of New York Chapter. He is an active member of the American Gastrointestinal Association, the American Advanced Studies of Liver Diseases, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Crohn's Colitis Foundation of America. He treats Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Gastrointestinal cancer, peptic ulcer and esophageal diseases including acid reflux to Barrett's Esophagus. Cancer screening and surveillance to prevent gastrointestinal cancer and liver cancer from chronic hepatitis C is his forte. He provides cutting-edge diagnostic and therapy, 24 hour pH monitoring and pill endoscopy for determining all obscure and difficult diagnostic dilemmas. His ultimate passion is liver-related diseases including medical aspects of liver transplantation. He conducted several studies in liver disease, particularly to prevent the progression of Hepatitis-C and Alcohol-related liver ailments. He has a special interest in studying Iron Overload Syndrome and the most prevalent entity of Fatty Liver Disease. He invented the endoscopically placed gastric balloon for morbid obesity. He has made a major contribution by inventing a clinical score (the TRAGEIC Score) for Acute Liver Failure, which is about to be launched in clinical trials in multiple university centers in the United States. He is currently working on a novel therapy for the most common infections of Helicobactor Pylori, multiple Oral medications for chronic Hepatitis-B and a unique predictor of earliest therapeutic response of chronic Hepatitis-C therapy.

He presently is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons as well as the Division Chief - Department of Gastroentrology & GI Endoscopy at North Shore University Hospital, Forest Hills
